Less than a month ago, Bethesda announced on their official blog that they would not be able to bring mod support “the way it should work” on the PlayStation 4 for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition. But now, Bethesda announced that they will indeed be supporting mods for both games on both the PS4 and the new PS4 Pro, but with one major limitation.
In their original post announcing they wouldn’t be supporting mods, they said that the way mods should work is where users can create anything they want for the games. But for the games on PS4 and PS4 Pro, modders will only be able to use in-game assets. Here’s what Bethesda said about that limitation:
“Mods on PlayStation 4 will allow you to modify and create your own content by using our Creation Kit available here. You will not be able to upload external assets with your PlayStation 4 mods, but you will be able to use any assets that come with the game, as most mods do. By creating a Bethesda.net account, you’ll be able to browse and try mods right from within the game.”
So that means no crazy mods where suddenly everyone is wearing Pacific Rim Jaeger armor. It also disqualifies many of the most popular existing Skyrim and Fallout 4 mods. While modders will be able to create some awesome mods using assets that are contained within the game itself, it’s definitely not quite the creative freedom that Bethesda initially wanted their players to have.
Skyrim will be getting the mod support first, when it launches on October 28th. Bethesda says that after work is finished on Skyrim, they will update Fallout 4. Both Fallout 4 and Skyrim will render in native 4k on the PS4 Pro.
