Writer, voice actor and co-creator of the animated show Rick and Morty Justin Roiland has teamed up with former Epic Games producer Tanya Watson to create their own VR studio called Squanchtendo. Watson has worked on titles like Gears of War, Bullet Storm and Fortnite.
The first game they are working on is a comedic action-RPG with a story, Roiland told Polygon. They plan on making all kinds of games, long games that people want to immerse themselves in and hang out in for hours at a time and shorter, crazier experiences that might be fun to play with lots of friends.
Roiland told Polygon he’s been contemplating VR for a while now. “I’ve been dabbling and fairly obsessed with VR across the different platforms. I’ve been filling notebooks with ideas and of course talking to a bunch of different developers and exchanging notes about what works and what doesn’t work in VR.”
Likewise, Watson was eager to get into the VR gaming space. After 10 years at Epic Games, she wanted to do something new, so when she met Roiland’s agent at E3 in 2016, things just fell into place.
The company promises to be a bit unconventional, which if you’ve ever watch Rick and Morty should be no surprise to you. Instead of announcing the creation of their company in a run-of-the-mill press release, they decided to release a comic. Check it out:
