Mansions of Madness Second Edition was one of best games I saw at Gen Con 2016. Fantasy Flight Games has taken the original Mansions of Madness, which required a game master, and transferred the role of the game master to a tablet. The tablet is beautifully integrated into the game, providing information, details, sound effects and randomization to each game. And now they’ve announced an expansion called Beyond the Threshold.
The expansion adds two new investigators, new items, new spells, and a new kind of monster that you’l have to fight. Most excitingly, the expansion will also come with two new scenarios for you to play. The first of the two scenarios is called The Gates of Silverwood Manor. Officer Tetsuo Mori has called you in to investigate a rash of disappearances connected to the manor. But all is not as it seems, because if you attempt to go back to rooms you’ve explored already, you’ll find only unfamiliar spaces.
The second scenario is called Vengeful Impulses, and you may also experience an “inconsistency of reality” while exploring. Your host Tomas Carvey thinks there is a malicious plot afoot, though figuring it out may be hampered by the darkness that envelops you and your fellow dinner guests.
I’m super excited for this expansion. It seems like Fantasy Flight will continue to support this game with new material, which is exciting. Even though all of the scenarios are randomized via the app, which does allow for some replay value, having new scenarios is very exciting. Fantasy Flight has also announced that while Beyond the Threshold won’t be available until early next year, they will be releasing new downloadable scenarios which will be playable with the core game.
