Learn how to tell what power supply you have in your PC. Ensure you have enough power to run new components.

How To Know What Power Supply You Have In Your PC

The power supply of a PC is the most important component. It is what powers the entire PC. Without it, none of the components will work. Furthermore, if there is a little defect in the power supply, the entire computer will stop working properly.

While a lot of people are interested in knowing what CPU or GPU their PC is packed with, some also want to know about their power supply. And today, we are going to discuss how to know what power supply you have on your PC.

How To Know What Power Supply You Have In Your PC

The quickest method of checking what power supply you have on your PC is by opening your PC case and checking the label on the power supply. Or, you can go to the manufacturer site of your PC if you bought a prebuilt one. We are going to talk more about this in detail below.

It is important to know what power supply is running in your PC, especially when you’re planning to upgrade some components. This is because if you’re going to install some latest components into an old PC, chances are that they are going to require more power. And if your power supply isn’t powerful enough, things can get a little rough. Therefore, before upgrading your PC, you should first find out what power supply you have on your PC.

There are three methods through which you can find out the exact model of the power supply you have. Both methods are accurate and aren’t time-consuming.

Method 1- Open Your PC Case

If you have ever seen a power supply, you might have noticed that there is a large sticker on it. This sticker has important information written on it, such as the wattage, serial number, model number, and the exact name of the power supply. There can be times when someone else might have fitted the power supply for you in your PC, and you forgot to check its name at that time. If you’re in this boat, don’t panic as there is a way to find out its name.

The first thing you need to do is turn off your PC. Then, detach the power cable as you don’t want any current running to the system during the process. Once done, open the case of your PC from the backside. After you remove the side panel, you should be able to see your power supply at the bottom.

However, the power supply is covered by the PSU shroud in some cases. If you see one when your open your PC case, you will first need to remove it. This can be done by unscrewing the screws. Usually, there are only four screws, so removing the PSU shroud won’t take much time. Once done, you can take out the power supply and then read the information on it.

Removing Power Supply From PC

The sticker will contain everything you need to know about the power supply, including the model number and other specifications. However, make sure that you don’t pull it out of your PC aggressively, as this can potentially damage the cables that are attached to the power supply. If this happens, you will need to either get it repaired or replace it with a new one.

Method 2 – Check The Box Of The Power Supply

If you purchased the components of your PC separately, chances are that you might still have the box of your power supply somewhere around your house. If you think you didn’t throw it away, go look for it. The box will have all the information about the power supply. In most cases, the exact model and the name of the power supply are written on the front. However, if it isn’t, you can try looking for it at the back. The component also comes with some paperwork, which includes a manual. If you want to know about your power supply in detail, we suggest you read the entire manual.

Method 3 – Check The Manufacturer Site of Your PC

The third and final method of checking what power supply you have on your PC is by directly going to the site of the manufacturer. However, this is only for those who have bought a prebuilt PC. Usually, your PC manufacturer will have the entire details listed on the website, including the power supply model.

What you need to do is go to the official website of the manufacturer and search for your computer model in the search bar. If there isn’t any search bar available, try looking for it on your own. When you open the product page of your computer, you will be able to find the specifications somewhere below. In the specifications, you will see “Chassis and Power Supply” or just “Power Supply.” This will let you know what power supply you have on your PC.

How To Know What Wattage My Power Supply Is

The wattage of the power supply matters a lot. For small builds that aren’t usually packed with the latest or powerful hardware, you won’t need a high-wattage power supply. However, for powerful builds, it is necessary to use a high-wattage power supply. Otherwise, your PC won’t turn on. Even if it does, there will be a chance for it to get damaged.

The process of finding out the power supply’s wattage is similar to finding out its model name. You can open your PC’s case, remove the PSU shroud, and take out the power supply to read the information on it. Along with the model number, you will be able to find out the wattage of your power supply.

Another method is to check the power supply box as it contains this information as well. Or, you can head over to the manufacturer’s website of your PC and look for it in the specifications. All three methods can help you quickly learn about the wattage of your power supply. If you’re upgrading a PC, make sure first to check out how much wattage is required for all components. For instance, if you’re planning to use a GTX 3090 GPU, then a 500 Watt power supply is going to be extremely low.

Wrapping Up

This was how to know what power supply you have on your PC. As you can see, the process isn’t complicated. Even if you somehow lost the box of your power supply, there are still ways that can help you find the model number and wattage of your unit.
