How Long Does It Take iPhone To Back Up

iPhones are one of the best smartphones available in the market. They are durable and offer some of the best features for their users. After all, they do come with a hefty price tag. Since you will be spending a lot on an iPhone, chances are that most of your important data is going to be stored on it. If this is the case, you need to create a backup of your iPhone to prevent data loss. And today, we are going to discuss how long it takes to backup an iPhone.

How Long It Takes To Backup an iPhone?

In most cases, it will take you anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes to backup your iPhone. However, various factors affect the backup speed, such as internet speed, the size of the data you need to be backed up etc.

Why Should You Backup Your iPhone?

If you’re someone who just his iPhone for calls and text messages, then you don’t need to backup anything. But if you think you have a good amount of important data stored on your device, such as pictures, then it is recommended that you create a backup as soon as possible. This is because once you lose your data because of any issue, there is no way of getting it back. Therefore, instead of regretting later, act now. Furthermore, if you have an old iPhone and you’re planning to switch to the latest model, you’ll need to backup your data in this scenario as well.

Things That Affect Backup Time

Now, a lot of people think that the backup time is the same for everyone. However, this is not the case at all as many things can affect the backup time, and you can see what they are below.

Data Size

A big mistake many people make is that they only backup their iPhones once a year. But what they don’t realize is that they end up storing a lot of data on their device in a year, and this increases the backup time. The larger the size of the data, the more time it will take to backup.

For instance, if you are backing up 100GB of data, it will take more time compared to if you’re backing up 10GB of data. Therefore, instead of storing data all year, it is recommened that you create a backup every month. This way, you will be able to backup your iPhone much more quickly. Furthermore, you will reduce the chances of losing your data by backing up frequently.

iPhone Model

It is only obvious that the latest iPhone models are better than the older ones. The latest ones have more features, better battery life, better screen, and overall better build quality. In addition to this, the latest ones also happen to offer better data transfer speed, something that makes the backup process quicker.

If you try to backup data on an iPhone 7 and at the same time on an iPhone 13 Pro Max, you’ll notice a significant difference in the speed. Therefore, do take your iPhone’s model into consideration before complaining about slow backup speed. While there is no shame in having an older model of the iPhone, you will need to bear with the slow backup times.

Internet Speed

When you backup your iPhone, the data is stored on the digital cloud. In other words, it gets sent over the internet. Because of this reason, your internet speed is going to have a huge effect on the backup time. If the upload speed of your internet is good, you can expect your iPhone to completely backup in no time. But if it’s the opposite, then prepare yourself to stare at the screen for a longer period.

For example, if your internet has a 4MBPs upload speed, you can expect 64GB of data to backup in 30 minutes. But if the speed is set at 2MBPs, the same amount of data will get backed up in around 60 minutes. Therefore, make sure you have a good internet connection if you don’t want to face any delays.

Type of Data

Another mistake people make is that they think every type of data gets backed up at the same speed. However, while data such as text messages and similar content gets backed up quickly, media files take more time.

If you have tons of videos, images, and other media files stored on your iPhone, you can’t expect them to backup quickly. This is because videos and images are large in size. Each picture can be anywhere from 2 to 8 MB if it’s taken by the iPhone. Multiply this with the hundreds or thousands of pictures that you’ll have stored on your iPhone. And this is just for the pictures, as the file size of videos is much greater.

How To Increase iPhone Backup Speed

If you’re currently facing slow backup times on your iPhone, don’t panic as there exist some ways that can help you speed up the process. If you do everything correctly, you will be able to reduce backup time to almost half. In other words, you won’t have to worry about how long it takes to backup an iPhone anymore.

Switch to A Better Internet Network

Now, as discussed before, your internet is going to have a big effect on backup time as the data will be getting stored on a cloud. If you want to speed up the backup process, you will need to connect to a better internet network if your current one is proving to be slow.

What I’ll recommened is that you connect to either a 4G or 5G network, as these two offer some of the highest upload speeds. First, make sure you’re phone supports 4G or 5G. Then, you can go ahead and subscribe to an internet package of your network. You can also try going to a friend’s place and using their internet if they have a better package.

I personally tried using both my regular Wifi network and the 4G of my network, and the difference was huge. With wifi, the data backed up in around 50 minutes, while the same amount of data backed up in 25 minutes with 4G. This is how big of a difference it makes.

Don’t Backup Everything

I get it, you love all of your data. After all, you spent an entire year storing it on your iPhone. However, this does not mean that you need to backup everything. If you go and take a look at your gallery, you will notice that there are hundreds of unnecessary pictures and videos. Memes, random videos from the internet, screenshots that you took for no reason, and much more.

Before starting the backup process, it is necessary that you remove everything that you don’t need. Go spend a few minutes in your gallery and you’ll be surprised to see how many files are occupying your iPhone’s storage space for no reason. If you remove things that you don’t need in the future, you will be able to backup your iPhone in no time.

Disable Applications That Consume A Lot of Data

If you’re facing slow backup times even after you have connected to a better internet, chances are that some applications are consuming a lot of data. In this case, you have to go to Settings > Application and then disable them from here. Usually, applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Netflix, and Whatsapp consume the most amount of data, so it’s better to disable them during the backup process. However, do keep in mind that disabling an application will mean that its data won’t get backup.

Use An Alternate Storage Option

iPhone users are crazy about using iCloud and iTunes for backing up their devices, and they should be. These two are designed by Apple for iPhone users and there is nothing wrong with them. However, there can be times when due to some bug or any other issues these two services stop working properly, because of why you might constantly face long backup time. If this happens to you, it’s time to switch to some other option.

At the moment, Google Drive and DropBox are considered the best alternates to iCloud and iTunes. You can trust them with keeping your data safe. Both of them are used by millions of people from all around the world.

Backup Your iPhone Frequently

As mentioned before, if you keep on delaying backing up your iPhone, you will keep on storing more and more data. Because of this reason, the backup process will be slow. However, if you backup your iPhone once a month, you will be able to save a lot of time as a small amount of data won’t take that much time to backup.

Avoid Using Your Phone During The Backup Process

While it is completely safe to use your iPhone during the backup process, we recommened that you don’t. Most people just go back to the menu after starting the backup and continue using their phones normally. However, what they don’t realize is that this has a negative effect on the backup time.

Your iPhone will be already busy handling the backup task and putting more burden on it by using other applications with only slow down the process. Therefore, it is recommened that you avoid using your phone during it. I mean, you will live without using your phone for an hour.

Wrapping Up

This was everything you needed to know regarding how long it takes to back up an iPhone. As you can see, the backup time will be different for everyone, depending on how much data they are backing up and the type of internet connection they have. If you’re facing slow times, you can try following the methods we mentioned as they will help you with increasing the speed. Before you leave, make sure to check out whether you can text someone you blocked on iPhone or not.
