Sons of the Forest is finally here after a long-anticipated wait. It’s the sequel to the extremely popular survival game ‘The Forest”. In this iteration of the game, you are trying to find a missing billionaire on a remote island.
So far the game looks amazing but many players are reporting that they are experiencing crashing and freezing. The game is currently in early access and is not yet fully optimized meaning that it can be a real resource drain on your PC, pushing your components to the max.
In this guide, we are going to show you how you can avoid crashes and freezing in Sons Of The Forest.
How To Fix Crashing In Sons Of The Forest
There are a number of reasons your game could be crashing. Go through each of the steps below to ensure your game stops crashing.

The recommended specs for Sons Of The Forest on PC are as follows:

We highly recommend having at least the minimum requirements to run this game as even playing on the minimum requirements will likely give poor performance.
Adjust Your Graphics Settings
If you have confirmed that you have the recommended specs then you may just need to adjust your graphics settings. As I mentioned before this game is very graphics intense so if you want high frames per second you will need to tone down your settings.
I have put together a full guide on the best settings for high FPS in Sons Of The Forest. Use this guide to adjust your settings for better performance.
Update Your Drivers
Before launching the game, you will want to ensure that you have the latest drivers for your graphics card. You can do this by downloading and installing them from your manufacturer’s website.
Holding Down The Inventory Key
Some players on Reddit have stated that holding down the inventory key is causing their game to crash. While it isn’t happening for everyone it could be the reason your game is crashing.

When new games come out the manufacturers will usually release optimizations that help the game run better.
Verify The Integrity Of Game Files
There is a chance that certain files have been corrupted during the download or installation process. Steam has a built-in feature that will scan files and check if any are corrupt, then fix them if they are. To use this feature, follow the steps below:
- Open your Steam Client
- Navigate to games
- Right-click on Sons Of The Forest –> Properties
- Navigate to the ‘Local Files’ tab
- Click on ‘Verify the integrity of game files’
- Steam will then scan the files and fix anything that is broken
- Once complete you can restart your PC and launch Sons of The Forest
This should have fixed any corrupt files that were initially installed.
Firewall/Antivirus
In your firewall or Antivirus software, whitelist Sons of The Forest as the firewall software could be interfering with the game. Especially, if you are having trouble connecting to multiplayer servers.
Close Background Applications
There is a small chance that other applications you have open on your computer are causing the game to crash. Try running the game with all other background tasks closed. This includes Chrome, Discord etc. Use the task manager to close these applications, then boot up Sons Of The Forest.
If any other application was causing issues the game should now run smoothly.
Wrapping Up
Those are all of the fixes that we currently have available. If anything more specific appears on our radar we will keep this article updated and let you know. If you find anything yourself let us know in the comments.
