Codenames Board Game Wins Spiel Des Jahres Award

The Spiel des Jahres award is one of the most prestigious board game awards around. There are three categories, Game of the Year, Children’s Game of the Year, and Kenner Game of the Year. The Kenner Game award is given to games that are seen to be a bit more complex than the Game of the Year nominees.

Codenames by Vlaada Chvatil took home the top honor, winning the Game of the Year award. It beat out Imhotep and Karuba for the prize. Codenames is a party game where two teams are competing to correctly guess the codenames of all of their agents first. The board is a grid of cards with different words on them. The clue-givers have a corresponding grid that shows which cards are theirs. The clue-givers for each team can only give their teams a hint consisting of a number and a word. The number refers to how many cards they are trying to get their team to guess, and the word is something that is supposed to connect all of the cards together. The first team to correctly guess all of their agents’ codenames wins.

Stone Age Junior beat out Leo and Mmm! for the Children’s Game of the Year, and Isle of Skye took home the Kenner Game of the Year, topping Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 and T.I.M.E. Stories.
