Board Game Awards Spiel des Jahres Nominees Announced

The Spiel des Jahres nominees have been announced. There are three categories, Game of the Year 2016, Children’s Game of the Year 2016, and Kenner Game of the Year 2016. The Kenner Game of the Year is specifically given to games that are more complex.

The three games nominated for the Game of the Year category are:

  • Codenames - a party game where team leaders give their team two word clues to try to get them to guess the right “code names” from 25 possibilities
  • Imhotep - players are attempting to build as many monuments in Egypt as possible, so they can secure the title of the best builder
  • Karuba - in this tile-laying race game, players are trying to find and explore temples and collect items

The games nominated for the Children’s Game of the Year are:

  • Leo - Leo the lion’s mane has grown too long, and players are trying to help him get to the barber shop
  • Mmm! - is a co-op game about mice trying to eat food from the pantry and avoid the cat
  • Stone Age Junior - travel back to the Stone Age and help the first humans settle the world

The Kenner Game of the Year nominees are:

  • Isle of Skye - is a tile-laying game with bidding mechanics about trying to have the best kingdom
  • Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 - Players work together to try to attempt to stop a pandemic. Each game in the campaign players will change the board, rip up cards, and discover new mechanics
  • T.I.M.E. Stories - This co-op game has people play as Time Agents, who go back in time to try to stop a “temporal rift” from happening. The game involves a lot of trial and error and some puzzle and problem solving
