Blizzard is finally fixing Roadhog’s hook. Currently, the hook can grab heroes through walls, through the payload, through other players. And sometimes when you’re hooked, you get pulled next to Roadhog instead of pulled right in front of him, which can lead to some annoying and ridiculous exploits.
Overwatch’s Principal Designer Geoff Goodman posted about the coming changes to the Hog’s Hook on Blizzard’s Forums. Those changes will be available soon in the PTR.
The first biggest change will be that there will be a line-of-sight check to see if the hook can connect. Importantly, the check will be from Roadhog’s point-of-view, not from the hook, so Roadhog will only be able to hook someone that he can actually see. But even more than that, the developers have added a “persistent line-of-sight check” once the hook has landed.
“This means if you get hooked and move out of LOS quickly (either you dashed, were falling, were pushed, etc), the hook will now break early and not pull the target,” Goodman wrote.
They are also tweaking the mechanics so that the victim of a hook will be pulled to directly in front of Roadhog, rather than be pulled in a straight line towards the hero. Goodman says that they are also implementing a cap as to how far to the side victims are pulled, “so you can’t just hook someone, spin 180, and dump someone off a cliff.”
While the physics-defying hook has made for some hilarious moments in the game, players have been clamoring for Blizzard to fix the hook for a long, long time. Goodman admits that these fixes will probably make Roadhog feel a bit less powerful initially, but their team will be monitoring the hero’s performance and will make further tweaks if they think Roadhog needs it.
