Lightning, the protagonist of Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels, is currently part of a fashion campaign with Louis Vuitton. The company released an exclusive interview with Lightning to The Telegraph, where she opened up about her new role as a fashion icon.
(Yes, it’s an interview with Lightning. Not her voice actress, not her designer-Lightning herself.)
“…the moment I laid eyes on [Nicolas Ghesquière’s] collection, it was as if I was hit by a bolt of lightning. I knew that with this, people could change. I could change,” Lightning said.
She continued, “My clothes were nothing more than armor to stay alive; “dressing up” was a concept I’ve never had. Perhaps that makes me an unseemly choice as ambassador. But this experience has opened my eyes. Fashion isn’t something you’re taught or given, it comes from your own taste and your own choices. It displays the essence of who you are to the people around you.”
It’s a statement I can get behind.
Lightning might seem an odd choice for a fashion campaign at first. In the original game, she’s a stoic warrior, and a member of the police force. Her latest game, however, had a slightly unique armor mechanics-different outfits gave her different powers and abilities.
“Lightning is the perfect avatar for a global, heroic woman and for a world where social networks and communications are now seamlessly woven into our life,” explained Ghesquière when the collection was announced. “She is also the symbol of new pictorial processes. How can you create an image that goes beyond the classic principles of photography and design? Lightning heralds a new era of expression.”
