Indie Game Spotlight: Mystery Thriller Solstice Features Two People of Color as Protagonists

Solstice, developed by MoaCube, is a visual novel that is a mystery thriller set in a magnificent city in the middle of a frozen wasteland. During the dead winter season the metropolis is cut off from the rest of the world by raging blizzards. Only a small group of misfits, who either cannot or don’t want to leave inhabit the town during the dead winter season.

When a local madman goes missing, an ambitious doctor and a mysterious young women start investigating the true nature of the beautiful city.

As you play through the game, you switch between the two protagonists, and refreshingly, both of them are people of color. They each investigate the mysteries and secrets of the city in their own way, and the people who live there react differently to them. Everyone has a secret, and each choice you make could help you uncover bits of information. Romances are possible, and as the trailer shows, at least one of them has the possibility of a same-sex pairing.

Reviews have been positive so far, with the RPGFan site writing, “If you are a visual novel fan, Solstice needs to be one of the games you play this year. With its twisted storyline, sumptuous graphics, and evocative music, it’s everything a genre fan could want.”

The game is available on Steam for Windows and Mac for $19.99. If you’re on the fence about the game, you can download a demo of the game here. They also offer a digital collector’s edition with the soundtrack, printable Solstice playing cards, a PDF of a making of art book, 3 posters and 10 wallpapers for $29.99.

Or if you want to go all out, they offer a limited edition physical copy, which comes with the full contents of the digital collector’s edition in addition to a physical copy of the playing cards, the making of book, a set of prints, and a hand-written letter of thanks from the team.
