There’s nothing worse for a lapsed MMO player than the chance to play again…for free.
Now Final Fantasy XIV players can return again to the worlds from whence they fled, for 96 hours during December. Square Enix is launching a “Free Login Campaign” along with Patch 3.1, which lets users whose accounts have lapsed come back at no cost to play the game.
The window is open from now until December 31.
You’re eligible if you’ve bought and registered the game, but have been inactive for at least 30 days. The free log-in period will begin as soon as you’ve logged back into your account, and Square Enix cautions that if you log in less than 96 hours before the December 31 deadline, you won’t be able to play through the whole login period. After the log-in period is over, players will be forcibly logged out.
Unless you’re paying for your subscription! In which case, rock on my friend!
A word of caution: from the wording, it seems like you’re going to want to start at midnight, and perhaps on a weekend.
“Including the day on which you first log in, the free login period lasts approximately four days,” the announcement says. They go on to say that if you start at 12:00 AM, the log-in period ends four days later at 11:59 PM. However, it looks like the free log-in will always end at 11:59 PM on the fourth day. So it seems like if you started in the evening, you wouldn’t be able to play a full 96 hours because it counts your first day as one day. Check out the wording and see if you agree.
The 3.1 patch also includes new raids and dungeons, as well as a new mini-game. FFXIV’s latest release was the Heavensward expansion, which came out last summer.
