Steam Announces Top 100 Sellers from 2016

Valve has announced the 100 games that made the most money on Steam in 2016. While Steam didn’t specify how much each game made, they did rank them in tiers, with the highest placing in Platinum, then down to Gold, then Silver, and then the rest of the games placed in the Bronze category.

In no particular order, the top 12 earners on Steam were:

  • No Man’s Sky
  • Fallout 4
  • Civilization 6
  • The Division
  • Total War: Warhammer
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  • Grand Theft Auto 5
  • XCOM 2
  • DOTA 2
  • Rocket League
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • Dark Souls 3

Stardew Valley, the hit indie farming simulator, was placed in Gold, along with some of the more big budget games like Call of Duty: Black Ops and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Vavle did not go into detail about how they were measuring the amount of money each game made. They just state that the rankings are based off of the “gross revenue” of each game from 2016, without breaking down how much the game made from the initial sale versus the in-game purchases. Though I’m pretty sure that for free to play games like DOTA 2, we can safely assume that all of the revenue from the year was from in-game purchases.

You can check out the breakdown of all 100 games over on Steam’s website.
