Hearthstone’s Senior Game Designer Ben Brode has been making some “Designer Insights” videos for the last few months, but the community is hungering for more. In the wake of questions about the “Designer Insights” videos, Brode took to Reddit to explain why more of the team hasn’t been getting involved.
Brode says that even though he loves doing the videos, many on their team are nervous about becoming a public face of the game, because they fear the harassment that often comes with becoming a public figure on the internet.
“I love doing videos, and I think I can convince more of the team to get involved, so it’s not just me. Not everyone is as excited about being a public face as Yong and I are, though – there is a lot of harassment that comes with being more public,” Brode said.
Brode actually doesn’t even make the videos in any kind of official space, as he explained on Reddit. He just makes them in his bedroom after his child goes to sleep.

In his post, Brode says that he is working on getting a space specifically to make these videos, so that in the future it will be a bit easier for anyone on the team who’s interested in doing “Designer Insights” videos to actually record them.
Internet harassment and toxicity has become too often a staple of the gaming and nerdy online community. Developers and gamers alike routinely deal with harassment. Ultimately harassment and toxicity hurt the whole community, from making developers shy away from reaching out to the community to alienating gamers.
So if you’re online and you’re about to type something nasty in the comments or say something mean while in a game, just don’t. Don’t be a dick. Let’s all work together to bring the community up through constructive communication instead of tearing it down through toxic talk.
