Francis Ford Coppola Kickstarting Apocalypse Now Video Game

Francis Ford Coppola is turning to Kickstarter to create a video game version of his critically acclaimed movie Apocalypse Now. The game will be an “immersive, psychedelic horror RPG,” where the player will take on the role of Captain Benjamin Willard, who’s tasked with assassinating Colonel Walter E. Kurtz.

The game will be an interactive recreation of Willard’s journey. Players will get to choose how to react to horrible situations, so each playthrough will be unique. But unlike traditional RPGs, dialogue won’t be the main way that you’ll make decisions. Instead, you’ll be making choices through your actions.

The design team warns prospective players that just like in Vietnam, running in guns blazing will not get you through this game. Instead the game will be about managing your limited resources and proceeding cautiously.

Coppola has cherry-picked a pretty impressive development team. The game will be directed by Montgomery Markland (Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera), written by Rob Auten (Gears of War, Battlefield, Far Cry), and the game’s executive producer is Lawrence Liberty (Fallout: New Vegas, DC Universe Online).

The team says they’re turning to Kickstarter because they want to make a game that the traditional game publisher system won’t let happen. If they reach their goal of $900,000, they estimate that the game will be released in 2020. The Apocalypse Now Kickstarter goes until Friday, February 24.
