One of the few all-female team of game reviewers on YouTube is calling it quits.
Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell originally started their series of 10-minutes video reviews of board games as a way to try to raise awareness for the e-commerce board game store, Starlit Citadel, in Vancouver Canada.
After three seasons and millions of views Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell figured out that most of their views came from outside Canada, and that the videos didn’t drive much business to the store. But they also realized that their review videos were valuable to their viewers. So they turned to Patreon to raise money for a fourth season, and successfully funded it.
But now, with only one video left in their fourth season, the all-female team is saying goodbye. They haven’t given any particular reason for why they’re not going to continue making board game review videos, other than a nebulous “hopefully moving on to bigger and better things.”
Starlit Citadel Reviews is the only team of all-female tabletop reviewers on YouTube (at least that we’re aware of), and there are so few women who post reviews of board games and video games that their presence will definitely be missed.
There are a myriad of reasons why women may choose not to make gaming commentary videos, including workload, socialization, and fear of harassment. We do our best to promote gaming commentary and review videos by women when we find them, just like we did with Starlit Citadel Reviews (and if you find some that you think we should promote, let us know on Twitter and Facebook).
As for Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell, we wish them luck on their future endeavors. You can follow them on Twitter at @kajaswords and @mightyjoanna for more information on what they’ve got planned for the future.
