Kickstarted Yooka-Laylee Launches in April Without Promised Wii U Version

Yooka-Laylee, a colorful platformer in the style of Banjo-Kazooie, has just confirmed to their Kickstarter backers in an FAQ that there will no longer be a Wii U version of the game.

The Playtonic Games team, many of whom worked on Banjo-Kazooie, say that they worked hard on trying to get the game up and running for the Wii U, but in the end it didn’t work out.

“Despite our best efforts and exploring every possible avenue over, we’ve unfortunately encountered unforeseen technical issues that mean it will be impossible for us to release the game on Wii U as initially planned.”

They have now swapped over to working on bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch. Playtonic will be announcing more details about that version of the game early next year.

As for backers who picked the Wii U version of the game, Playtonic says you will be able to change your choice to any of the systems available on launch day, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac or Linux, for no extra cost, or you can wait and upgrade your version to the Nintendo Switch.

If backers who chose a Wii U version of the game simply want a refund of their pledge, they can message the creators directly on Kickstarter. If you don’t have a Kickstarter account, you can email the team at Kickstarter@Playtonicgames.com.

Yooka-Laylee is schedule to release on April 11, 2017.
