Rock Band 4’s Brutal Mode Will Challenge Expert Players

Harmonix has announced a new Rock Band 4 December update: Brutal Mode.

Brutal Mode will be available to Expert players in its own area off the main menu, and will put “even the most hardcore players’ skills to the test.” It will be available in solo or multiplayer. The idea is that the mode will modify the note track to react to how well you’re playing–the better you play, the harder it gets. Mastering the mode will get you a new Star threshold called the Crimson Star.

The December update will be free. You can watch Brutal Mode in action below.

Harmonix also announced the addition of three new metal tracks to the Rock Band Music Store, available December 8. Each track can be purchased individually for $1.99.

  • Between the Buried and Me – “The Coma Machine”
  • Opeth – “Heir Apparent”
  • Symphony X – “Nevermore”

Finally, Harmonix is hosting a nationwide Brutal Mode Battle, starting December 8 and going through December 19. Finalists will get to go to Boston for a live-streamed final event. Prizes include a Rock Band 4 console with a custom skin, a PAX East Penny Arcade Rock Band 4 guitar, and a full year’s worth of Rock Band 4 DLC.
