Rise Of The Tomb Raider Doesn’t Waste Time In New Gameplay Video

IGN has posted a 27 minute gameplay video of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the sequel to 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot.

The very beginning is the same footage that we saw at E3 2015, with Lara getting right down to business. She’s scaling sheer mountain walls with ice picks and risking her life in ways that make me glad I never decided to be an archaeologist.

“Shit, Lara,” her friend Jonah says. “You’re gonna give me a heart attack!”

Same, Jonah.

The new footage starts at about ten minutes in, after a nailbiting sequence that sees Lara swept away in an avalanche. Then we pop back to a prologue with voiceover from Lara’s father, who is researching immortality but has run into trouble with a sect called Trinity, that is after the same power and wants to control humanity. Just another whacky day in the Croft family.

Where she ends up is a far cry from the freezing mountain she started on. Lara’s next stop is the Syrian desert, where she’s hot on the trail of a tomb belonging to a long-dead prophet.

The movement in this game looks great. Watching Lara struggle through deep snow and bang against stone walls is realistic and frustrating.

If this preview is any indication, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be just as gruesome and painful as its predecessor. It comes out for Xbox One and Xbox 360 in November 2015, for PC in early 2016, and then for PlayStation 4 in late 2016 thanks to an exclusive deal with Microsoft.

You can learn more about Lara’s different skill sets here. You can also purchase a season pass to the game that will feature upcoming DLC.
