The new NIER game has a name: NieR: Automata. Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito and director Yoko Taro presented NieR: Automata at Paris Games Week, and we got a look at some gameplay.
“NIER struck a chord with many passionate gamers. It was something so special that we felt compelled to heed the fans’ call for a follow-up,” explained Saito. “To create the ultimate action-RPG, it dawned on me that a collaboration between PlatinumGames and SQUARE ENIX would be a dream come true.” The action sequences definitely look exciting from what we can see in the trailer:
The protagonist of the game is called “2B,” and she was designed by Akihiko Yoshida, an artist who also worked on Final Fantasy XIV and the Bravely Default series. “2B is an all-purpose battle android, deployed as a member of the automated infantry squad, YoRHa. She is equipped with a sword for close quarters combat, and can attack from range using the “Pod” support system.”
Apparently the YoRHa squad members only use code numbers as names, and are forbidden from expressing emotions.
As for the story, we don’t know a lot. In the past, invaders from another world attacked with no warning, with a secret weapon at their disposal; something called ‘the machines.’ Humans escaped to the moon and developed an army of android solders to protect themselves. The YoRHa squad is an entirely new set of android infantry, sent out to break the deadlock that’s formed between the machines and androids. “In the forsaken wasteland below, the war between the machines and the androids rages on. A war that is soon to unveil the long-forgotten truth of this world…”
At any rate, NieR: Automata looks gorgeous, and I’m looking forward to finding out more. The game is slated to come out for PlayStation 4 only, and doesn’t have a release date yet.
